Are dogs allowed on the beach at Charmouth?

Dogs are not allowed on West Beach between 1st May and 30th Sept, at any time. Dogs are not allowed on East Beach between 1st July and 31st Aug 10am to 6pm.

Coastal path access?

The coastal paths to both the east and west of Charmouth are both shut as the paths has fallen into the local landslides. Diversions are currently in place and are waymarked, leaflets detailing these diversions are available from the Centre.

Can we go fossil hunting at Charmouth?

Yes, the Centre runs a comprehensive programme of fossil hunting walks throughout the year for full details please read our Fossils Walks page for further information.

Do I need to book for my fossil hunting walk?

During the busy school holidays and summer months it is essential to book for the Centre walks. This can be done through this website's booking system or by telephone (01297) 560772. During the winter months it is still advisable to book ahead.

What equipment do I need for fossil hunting?

There is no essential equipment needed for fossil hunting apart from a good pair of eyes and something to carry your finds in. Hammers can be purchased at the Centre shop and can be hired from the fossil shop downstairs for £3 a day (with £10 deposit). It is essential that you check the tide times for the day and always go fossil hunting on a falling tide.

Is it possible to walk from Charmouth to Lyme Regis along the beach?

It is possible to walk all the way to Lyme Regis along the beach from Charmouth but only when the tide is low enough. You need to aim to reach the Lyme Regis end of the beach at low water as the recent landslide does restrict access as the tide comes in. The riskiest part is at the Lyme end where the groynes block the way when the tide comes in. If you are in any doubt, then please pop into the Centre to check for advice.

Are there parking facilities at the beach?

There are three car parks situated within easy reach of the beach. Coach parking is available a short five minute walk from the foreshore, located on Lower Sea Lane. Overnight parking is not permitted by the local council at any time.

When is the café open?

The Café below the Centre is open everyday from Easter until the end of October. They serve both hot and cold food and a variety of drinks and snacks. During the winter months hot drinks are available in the Centre.

Are there toilet facilities at the beach area?

Yes, the public toilets are located in a separate building at the rear of the Centre. There is also a disabled toilet on site and both the Beach Superintendent Office and the Centre hold a radar key if needed.
