A Brief History of our Centre

The Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, located in Dorset, is a thriving educational charity dedicated to preserving and showcasing the Jurassic Coast’s rich geological and fossil heritage. Established in 1984, the Centre has evolved from a derelict cement factory into an award-winning resource for visitors, attracting over 100,000 visitors annually in recent years.

Historical Highlights:

  • Origins: The building was originally a cement factory built in 1854, utilizing local Blue Lias limestone for rapid-setting cement. It ceased operations by 1870 and fell into disrepair.
  • Transformation: In 1984, the upper floor of the building was repurposed into the Heritage Coast Centre, with significant renovations funded by local councils, charitable trusts, and volunteers.
  • Development: Over the years, the Centre expanded its facilities, including a theatre, education room, and improved accessibility, supported by grants and community efforts.

Achievements:

  • Awards: The Centre has received numerous accolades, including the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (2016), the R.H. Worth Award (2019), and recognition from the Royal Geographical Society (2020).
  • Visitor Engagement: The Centre offers fossil walks, educational programs, and interactive displays, attracting families, schools, and researchers. It also collaborates with professional fossil collectors to showcase rare specimens.
  • Community Impact: Volunteers play a vital role in the Centre’s operations, contributing to maintenance, education, and public outreach.

Challenges and Future Plans:

  • Climate Threats: Rising sea levels and erosion pose risks to the building’s long-term stability. Trustees are exploring emergency plans and future relocation options.
  • Financial Sustainability: The Centre relies on donations, fossil walks, and shop sales to maintain free entry and fund operations.
  • Education Expansion: Outreach programs, online presentations, and school sessions continue to grow, supported by grants like the Royal Society of Chemistry’s funding in 2023.

Notable Events:

  • Sir David Attenborough’s Visit (2018): His endorsement highlighted the Centre’s importance in science and local efforts.
  • 40th Anniversary (2024): Celebrations included fairs, fossil walks, and new exhibits, marking four decades of success.

The Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre remains a cornerstone of the Jurassic Coast, inspiring visitors and fostering scientific engagement while navigating environmental and financial challenges.
